Jane, the Fox, and Me by Fanny Britt

jane and fox

This book is beautiful! It's heartbreaking and real and so wonderful, I just have to tell you about it.

Jane, the Fox, and Me is translated from French and takes place in Montreal, Canada. Our protagonist is Helene and at the beginning of the book, she has recently lost all her friends. The girls who used to be her friends now call her fat and smelly and write mean things about her on doors and bathroom stalls at school. She is alone and feels ugly.

She begins to read Jane Eyre by Charlotte Bronte, another young girl who feels ugly and unlovable. Helene can relate and learns from Jane's situation.

This is a graphic novel so the story is told in pictures. All the pictures of Helene's story are painted in sepia tones. All the pictures of Jane Eyre are in full color.

This is aimed at middle grade readers and I think it is excellent for tween girls. My daughter will be reading it. It's a great book about self-esteem and letting bullies control our thoughts about ourselves.
