Scary Books

Today's Top Five Wednesday topic is Non-Horror Books That Scared You. So books that are not meant to be scary, but had that effect anyway. This shouldn't be hard. I'm a wimp.

(3 hours later)

This is actually really hard. It's hard to decide which books that scared me are not meant to be scary. And also, I have a faulty memory, so right now I can't remember being very terrified by any of the books on my list. And sometimes I was actually more scared that something would happen instead of frightened when it did.

I guess I could say my database management textbook is scary, but that's because it's terrifying not to have any idea what is going on when you are going to be tested on it. I don't know if that's the kind of scary they mean.

Oh! I thought of one.

Career of Evil by Robert Galbraith - This is the third book in the Cormoran Strike series. This is the one where a serial killer starts stalking Robin. This scared me so much I couldn't finish the book. I read maybe 3 or 4 chapters and quit. Even though I know it will all turn out all right in the end, I couldn't do it.

The same sort of situation is happening for me with The Hate U Give by Angie Thomas - I know what it's about, but I've also heard it's heart wrenching and so very sad. I'm scared of it. So, I haven't even held it in my hands.

Night Film by Marisha Pessl - I own this book. At least I think I do. I ordered it. A package came from Amazon that I assume is this book. I never opened it. The unopened box is sitting on my bookshelf and has been for years. I really loved her first book, so I ordered this one pretty soon after it came out. But then I heard how terrifying it is. I don't think it's meant to be a horror novel, but it apparently missed the mark.

The Eye of the World by Robert Jordan - Here's one I haven't read because I'm afraid of the time commitment. My paperback copy is over 800 pages.

I guess that's all I've got. Do you know of any books that aren't meant to be scary, but scared you anyway? Do you have any like mine that you're scared to read for whatever reason?
