Friday Reads 1/19/2024

It's Friday! This has been a bizarre week. I feel like every time I cross something off my to-do list, two more things get added. I have spent a lot of time in meetings this week and not enough time doing the things. And this weekend is chock full of events, so I don't know how much reading time I will have. That being said, here is what's on my plate.

Emily Wilde's Encyclopaedia of Faeries by Heather Fawcett - I'm about 2/3 through this one and probably a good reading binge would have it finished off. This is one of those books where the secondary characters are better than the main character. Emily is probably supposed to be on the autism spectrum, but she's written as incredibly uptight and clueless. Wendell, the other professor who invited himself along on her trip, is much more interesting and likeable. Also, I like the dog, obviously.

James by Percival Everett - I was going to read The Mystery Writer for my next NetGalley book, but I got sidetracked by this one. It is a retelling of The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn from the perspective of Jim, the runaway slave. I started it on my lunch break today, so it's really too early to have an opinion.

If We Were Villains by M.L. Rio - After I finish Emily Wilde, I will pick up this one. It's a mystery about a group of college Shakespearean actors. It is told by the one that spent ten years in prison. The detective that put him away wants to know what really happened.

Considering the business of the week ahead, I think this is probably all I will be able to get to. I have several more books on my TBR, but probably they aren't all going to get read. Oh well.
