Most Anticipated Book Releases for the Rest of 2021
I am a member of Book Riot Insiders so I have access to this database of all the books coming out in coming months. I started picking through that and found several that excite me. I stopped when I got to 10. Here they are:
Half Sick of Shadows by Laura Sebastian - This is a King Arthur retelling from the point of view of the Lady of Shalott. It's an adult novel, so maybe it will be better than the one I read a couple of years ago that was YA. This comes out July 20.
The Reading List by Sara Nisha Adams - This is a book about a teenage library worker and a middle-aged father of a teen girl who bond over a random list of books found in a library book. My kind of fiction! This will be published August 3.
Paradise: One Town's Struggle to Survive and American Wildfire by Lizzie Johnson - You may or may not be aware of my fascination with natural disasters. Disaster Porn I've heard it called. This book is about the little town of Paradise, CA that got destroyed by that big wildfire in California called Camp Fire. These are the stories of the people who lived there. We should see this one on August 17.
Today a Woman Went Mad In the Supermarket by Hilma Wolitzer - I read a novel by this author in 2018. I didn't love it, but I like the writing enough to pick up this book of short stories. Also, the title is highly relatable. I've felt like going mad in the supermarket. Supermarkets are like that. This will be published on August 31.
Matrix by Lauren Groff - I have read several books by Groff. They are weird and interesting and I liked her writing. In a bit of a departure, this is a historical novel about a teenage girl in the twelfth century who is cast out of France and sent to England to be the prioress of a failing abbey. This could be really cool. This should see the light of day on September 7.
A Lot Like Adios by Alexis Daria - I liked Daria's first book, You Had Me at Hola. I feel like the main character in this book could be a side character from the other one. That appears to be confirmed in the Goodreads comments on the book. So at least I'll have some background about the family here. A good romance is apparently a thing I like now. This one comes out on September 14.
Defy the Night by Brigid Kemmerer - At this point, I will read pretty much whatever Kemmerer puts out. Which is shaping up to be 2 books a year right now. This is the first in a new series of fantasy novels. She wrote my favorite book of 2019, which was also a fantasy novel, so it stands to reason that this will fit the bill. This one of two YA books on this list will be released on September 14.
Fuzz: When Nature Breaks the Law by Mary Roach - Mary Roach is so interesting! I will admit I didn't read the books I thought might be to gross for me (body horror is not my jam) or the one about space (although I've considered it.) But I read a few; enough to know I will enjoy this one. The laws in question are human and the nature that breaks them is, well, natural. Like jaywalking moose, for instance. Or pickpocketing monkeys. This promises to be hysterical. September 14 appears to be a fantastic date for book releases this year!
White Smoke by Tiffany D. Jackson - This is the other YA novel on this list. And it's a haunted house story! I'm hoping I get a copy of this before October so I can read it for Spooktober. This also comes out on September 14.
Under the Whispering Door by T. J. Klune - I realize this looks like a children's book, but it is not. I just read his last adult novel, and I am ready for more. I don't know what it's about, but I don't need to. The last one was such fun that I will just add this to my list willy nilly. This one is scheduled to be released on September 21.
There are 10 books I'm looking forward to in the last half of 2021. Does anything here pique your interest?
