Friday Reads 10/8/21

Announcement! We have made it to Friday! I have to work on Sunday, so I'm only at work for 3 hours today which means I had time to read and run errands and have a small rest. It was great! I have a hair appointment tomorrow morning that will take up the entire morning. But after that, I plan to nap and do my house chores and read. What do I plan to read you may be asking? Well here it is:

Empire of the Vampire by Jay Kristoff - I have been waiting for 2 years for this bad mammajamma. And this beast is over 700 pages. And it's written for adults, so the text is small and the margins are similar. So I can't read too many pages at a time. I don't read that fast. And also, I want to enjoy it, so I'm reading it at my usual pace. On the other hand, I only have it for two weeks and one of those weeks is almost up. I really need to get to page 350 by the end of the weekend, which is about 250 more than where I am now. But with a good chunk of reading time tomorrow, I might make it happen? Maybe? I might have some reading time on Sunday morning before work also.

I'm really liking it so far. A vampire hunter (who happens to be half vampire) is captured but the vampire empress wants to hear his story before he is killed. So he is telling his story to a vampire scribe. So far we've learned where he grew up, his first encounter with a vampire, how he found out he was half vampire, and how he got drafted into a vampire hunter army. It's pretty gory, as is to be expected when you're dealing with an entire species who relies on blood for survival, but some of the characters are entertaining. The guy who trains the new recruits has some singularly hilarious insults.

Down Comes the Night by Allison Saft - If I start feeling guilty that I'm not reading enough for my award group, I'll pull this one back out. Our girl got thrown out of the army for not following orders, and now she's gone to another country to heal a nobleman's servant. Once she gets there she finds out the "servant" is actually the most feared member of the opposing army. If she heals him, she's helping the other side. But if she doesn't, the previously neutral country she's visiting will support the opposition. It's pretty political, but the nobleman's house is clearly creepy. Maybe even haunted. She has to follow weird rules there to protect herself.

I have a graphic novel I can tear through if I need to get through another award book with a quickness also, but I can't remember the name of it.

Anyway, those are my reading plans for this brief weekend. Wish me luck.
