May 2022 Goodreads Update Pt. 1

Since I've just been sitting around for the last 3 weeks, I've had plenty of time to add books to my TBR. Buckle up.

The Mayfair Bookshop by Eliza Knight - The description for this book had me at Nancy Mitford. This is one of those books that combines a current day storyline with that of the historical person. And it is not lost on me that the author's name is the same as that of one of Jane Austen's nieces.

Forever Amber by Kathleen Winsor - This is practically a classic of historical romance. Published in 1944 originally, it's still making the rounds.

All My Rage by Sabaa Tahir - Sabaa Tahir has written tons of YA fiction. This is her first adult novel. It's about a couple of second-generation Pakistan-Americans who are trying to navigate life as outcasts in small-town California.

The Murder of Mr. Wickham by Claudia Gray - Gray usually writes YA sci-fi/fantasy. But of all the Austen villains, no one deserves to be murdered more than Mr. Wickham.

The Girl Who Could Move Shit With Her Mind by Jackson Ford - This is about a girl who has telekinesis and works for the FBI. Then a body turns up at the scene of her last job and she has to prove it wasn't her. This is the first in a series.

Delilah Green Doesn't Care by Ashley Herring Blake - Another YA author branching into adult novels. This is about a girl who has to go back to her home town to photograph her step-sister's wedding. When she is thrown together with her step-sister's best friend, she decides she might as well have some fun.

Curse the Day by Annabel Chase - Emma finds herself in a small town in the Poconos when she discovers she's a wish. So it's lucky the town of Spellbound is full of paranormals. The first in a cozy mystery series.

The Flight Attendant by Chris Bohjalian - Cassandra is a flight attendant who spends most nights drunk in a different country. One morning in Dubai, she wakes up next to a bloody corpse and she doesn't remember the night before. This is a psychological thriller. I've read another of his thrillers and enjoyed it. He tends toward literary novels mostly.

Black Cake by Charmaine Wilkerson - The title refers to a traditional Carribbean cake recipe left to estranged siblings by their mother. They follow the trail of their mother's life from the Carribbean to London to California.

Why Has Nobody Told Me This Before? by Julie Smith - This is a self-help book of sorts about navigating life's ups and downs with practical steps.

How To Keep House While Drowning: A Gentle Approach to Cleaning and Organizing by K.C. Davis - I heard about this on a podcast. I currently only have enough energy to take care of the chores that absolutely have to be done so we can continue to eat and leave our house.

The Viscount Who Loved Me by Julia Quinn - I bought this a week or so ago. I liked the first one enough to carry on. This is about a different member of the Bridgerton family.

Booked on a Feeling by Jayci Lee - So I didn't realize this is the third in a series, but I'm going to assume I don't need to read the others first. Lizzy is a fast-rising lawyer in L.A. when she has a massive panic attack and finds herself back in her small hometown recovering. She decides to revamp the local bookstore while she's "resting" and a friend from childhood is going to help. And he's bringing his decades long crush with him.

Our Missing Hearts by Celeste Ng - This book doesn't come out until October, but I have really liked Ng's other books, so I've added it already.

Foul Lady Fortune by Chloe Gong - This is a historical mystery set in Shanghai in the 1930s. Fortune survived a near-death experience that rendered her un-killable. To solve a series of murders, she has to pretend to be married to a government official.

Seance Tea Party by Reimena Yee - I found all these books on a Goodreads list of Asian-American authors. It's a middle grade graphic novel about a girl whose friends are growing up without her so she makes friends with the ghost in her house.

The Hacienda by Isabel Canas - A young woman is in dire straits so she marries a rich man and is taken to his large estate and left alone. The staff won't stay in the house because it's haunted.

Master of Iron by Tricia Levenseller - This is the second book after Blade of Secrets that I read and enjoyed last year. It's about two sisters, one of which has a magical ability with iron, but is paralyzingly anxious.

Sleepyhead: Narcolepsy, Neuroscience and the Search for a Good Night by Henry Nicholls - I mean. Obviously.
