It's Magic

For some reason this didn't go out on Wednesday as planned. Sorry for the double posting today.

Today's Top 5 Wednesday topic is Favorite Books with Magic. I went through my read books list on Goodreads. I started with the most recent reads and went backwards.

I really thought I read more books with magic, but I had to go back a whole year to find 5. I didn't count things like ghosts, or Addie LaRue who lived 300 years, or anything like that. They didn't actually HAVE magic, just weird stuff happened to them. So here are the last five books I read with magic in.

House of Earth and Blood by Sarah J. Maas - It might have taken me 6 weeks to read this tome, but I really enjoyed it. Most of the characters have some kind of magic. It's very interesting and the author followed her own rules, which I appreciate. Someone doesn't suddenly become able to do something they couldn't for no reason.

Empire of the Vampire by Jay Kristoff - I realize vampires aren't inherently magical, but these folks are. And our main character is half vampire and also a vampire hunter.

The Chosen and the Beautiful by Nghi Vo - The magic in this was more subtle. Almost like magical realism. The Thai people could turn paper animals into live animals. It was a neat party trick.

The Bone Orchard by Sara A. Mueller - This was damn near bizarre. So this woman could take her trauma responses and separate them from herself and turn them into separate people. All these women work in a brothel. She assigns them to various customers based on how each one responds to the person. It's very weird, but it's a great book.

Gideon the Ninth by Tamsyn Muir - There was magic all through this book. It was about a bunch of wizards who came together for a contest to be the number one. I liked the humor in this one. The witty banter was top notch.

There you have it. Those are the last five books I've read with magic. It just so happens that I really liked all five of these books. Maybe I should be hunting out more books with magic.

Do you have any favorite magical books?
