September 2023 TBR

Oh man. September is almost here! It will still be ridiculously hot in the beginning, but I love saying goodbye to August! All of that being said, it's time to set my To Be Read list for the new month. I love this part. All the hopes for a new reading month. Well before I'm tired of looking at the same books on the pile. Yay!

Bitch in a Bonnet: Reclaiming Jane Austen from the Stiffs, the Snobs, and the Saps by Robert Rodi - This is my long book from my 50 by 50 list for September, although the "long book" and the "short books" are pretty close to the same page numbers. This one has 424 pages.

All I Did Was Ask: Conversations with Writers, Actors, Musicians, and Artists by Terry Gross - I used to love listening to her show on NPR. She has a very soothing voice. This "short" book has 384 pages.

Dopesick: Dealers, Doctors and the Drug Company that Addicted America by Beth Macy - This is considered one of the best books on the opioid addiction. I love that kind of stuff. This is 384 pages.

In review, my 3 50 by 50 books for this month are all nonfiction and all over 350 pages. The good news is that since they are all nonfiction, a portion of those pages are probably end notes and bibliography, so they aren't as big as they look.

I have a couple of library books checked out that I should add to this list.

Grave Reservations by Cherie Priest - This is the one about the medium who is a travel agent. She gets the attention of a police detective when she changes his flight right before it crashes on takeoff. He brings her in to investigate a cold murder case.

Thunder & Lightning: Weather Past, Present, Future by Lauren Redniss - I waited for 2 months for this book before giving up and requesting it from Mobius (similar to InterLibrary Loan). It has come in and I am looking forward to settling in with it one weekend.

Witch Hat Atelier, Vol. 1 by Kamome Shirahama - My kid said everyone on the interwebs pronounces it "ah-TELL-ee-er" which gave me shivers. I had to google it to prove I was saying it correctly: "ah-TELL-ee-ay". This is a manga, so it will just take an hour or so to blaze through. I hope it's as cute as it looks.

I also need to read two more books from my shelves to be able to reach that goal. I shall peruse my list and pick a couple.

Finding God in the Mess: Meditations for Mindful Living by Brendan McManus SJ and Jim Deeds - I had to google SJ. It means Society of Jesus. He's a Jesuit monk (?), priest (?). I don't know. One of those things. I love the picture on the cover here. I'll try it out to see if it's an acceptable level of woo-woo for me. This is currently the shortest book on my shelves, coming in at 128 pages.

The Partly Cloudy Patriot by Sarah Vowell - It's been several years since I read a Sarah Vowell books. They are generally hilarious, but also full of information. This one is a collection of essays about American history and her own history, taken from all over the country. I didn't know she was from Oklahoma until I listened to one of her books on audio and was struck by her Muskogee twang. This is also pretty short at 197 pages. I'm setting myself up for success by choosing short books.

I'm so happy I ditched the Sequoyah books. What a relief!

I am taking a reading vacation in September. I will post a separate TBR for that trip later. When I told my friend I was going to Denver for my birthday, she said, "Are you doing the dream? Please say you're doing the dream trip." I am doing the dream trip. I'm so excited. Sitting in a house in the quiet, with a great view, and reading my books. Whee!
