October 2023 TBR
Hear me out. I am this l_________l close to meeting my 50 by 50 challenge! Literally 4 books left. So this month, I'm going to focus on reading this last bit. It won't be easy. Like, this is not a fun set of books. But next month, I can read whatever I want!
Bitch in a Bonnet: Reclaiming Jane Austen From the Stiffs, the Snobs, the Saps, and the Simps by Robert Rodi - I'm on the last book in this collection, Mansfield Park. The author clearly despises this book and that makes a lot less interesting to read. Also, his analysis of the book takes the same amount of pages as the first two books together. This was on my September list, but it won't be finished by Sunday.
Tombstone: The Earp Brothers, Doc Holliday, and the Vendetta Ride From Hell by Tom Clavin - Everything I learned about Tombstone I learned from the movie with Val Kilmer. I liked this author's Dodge City, so I'm looking forward to this one.
Evicted: Poverty and Profit in the American City by Matthew Desmond - I've had this on my shelf for far too long. I don't know that I'd say I'm looking forward to this, but I kind of am? So many of my customers at the library are living this every day.
Columbine by Dave Cullen - And the hits just keep on coming. This list has gotten progressively grimmer as it goes. But this is the last books on my 50-by-50 list.
One of Us Is Back by Karen M. McManus - Ok. I know. I took this with me on vacation and didn't read it. I didn't feel like it. It's due at the library, but maybe I can get it back quickly.
Emily Wilde's Encyclopaedia of Fairies by Heather Fawcett - This one actually turned up at the very last minute before my trip. Remember how I said it would be perfect to read on the side of a mountain in a forest? Yeah. It probably would have been, but that's not where we ended up staying. So, it didn't get read.
A Court of Thorns and Roses by Sarah J. Maas - I might be the last person on Earth who hasn't read this, but here I go. I started this on vacation, but it's over 400 pages and that won't get read before October 1. Especially since I'll be in the car for 2 days.
Since it IS October, and October is spooky season, I feel like I should give a nod to the season with something spooky.
The Dead Romantics by Ashley Poston - This is about an author whose new editor is cute, but kind of a jerk. She goes to her home town to help her dad in his funeral home. The editor shows up there, but he's a ghost. It's a romance.
Her Majesty's Royal Coven by Juno Dawson - This is about four witches who were once part of Her Majesty's Royal Coven (England's witch segment of the government). The parted ways when there was a split in the community. Now there is a new threat, and they have to heal the breach to work together to stop it.
So we have witches and ghosts. That's pretty seasonal.
9 books. That's pretty ambitious. Well, I guess we'll see what happens!
