October 2023 Goodreads Update
I once heard that adulthood is just a series of saying "Things will slow down after next week" over and over again until you die. I'm looking at the calendar and it's going to be a long 10 days to my birthday.
That's been said, so let's talk about books. That's happy-making.
Here is what I have added to my TBR this month:
Empire of the Damned by Jay Kristoff - This is the sequel to Empire of the Vampire. It comes out in February, so I am going to see if I can get it from NetGalley.
How to Say Babylon by Safiya Sinclair - This is a memoir by a woman who was raised in a strict Rasta household in Jamaica. I've heard amazing things about it. This one just came out this month, so I will probably wait for the paperback.
Lights All Night Long by Lydia Fitzpatrick - This is about a Russian exchange student whose brother has disappeared into the shady underbelly of drugs and violence in their home town. This book is a couple of years old which makes me wonder why I am just now hearing about it.
The Art of Prophecy by Wesley Chu - This is book that begins with a prophecy about a chosen warrior, but the prophecy turns out to be wrong. The paperback just released this spring. Look at that cover art!
Doc Holliday: The Life and the Legend by Gary L. Roberts - I am currently reading Tombstone by Tom Clavin. In the foreword he credits this book with a lot of his information regarding Doc. Apparently, he wasn't all that great a shot. He just got lucky. I'm waiting for the part where he gets good.
The Last Gunfight: The Real Story of the Shootout at the O.K. Corral - And How It Changed the American West by Jeff Gunn - This is the other book Clavin mentioned in his foreward. I foresee a rabbit hole of Old West reading in my future.
Assistant to the Villain by Hannah Nicole Maehrer - Apparently, this started as a TikTok series. Evie needs to support her ailing mother so she needs a job. She gets an offer from The Villain and can't say no. Then some do-gooder decides to try to take down The Villain, but Evie's not having it. Sounds like fun.
The Infinie Blacktop by Sara Gran - I didn't know this existed. I read the first two books in this series, and thought it was over. This came out 5 years ago! Anyway, Claire DeWitt is a hardcore, noir-type detective. She's a loner with a shady past and a small drug habit. The books are very gritty and remind me of Walter Mosley.
A Wizard's Guide to Defensive Baking by T. Kingfisher - And now for something completely different. This is a cozy fantasy with a main character whose magic extends only to baking. The book has been out for a couple of years, but I've only started hearing buzz about it in the last few months. I think the sequel recently released.
And that's the list! I've been very stingy with my adds. There are stil 973 books on my want-to-read list. Everything's fine.
