December 2024 Mid-Month Wrap Up
I have managed to finish a whole 3 books so far in December. Goodreads keeps telling me I am 2 books behind on my reading goal. Rude! Anyway, here they are:
Government Information Essentials by Susanne Caro - I managed to finish this one and get it returned to the library a week early. It is very helpful and I am hoping to get the library to buy a copy for me. It's like $75 at the ALA store, so I'm not buying it myself. Let the library supply that one.
The Luminaries by Eleanor Catton - I finally finished this! At the sentence level, it was well-written. There were only 2 likeable characters in the whole thing and one of those is presumed dead for 3/4 of the book. There were really far too many people and a lot of shenanigans and flashbacks. It made it meandering and sometimes confusing. It was good, but I won't be putting it on my favorites shelf or even my re-read shelf.
Sixteen Scandals by Sophie Jordan - I finished this one today. It's a YA Regency Romance. Primrose finds our on her 16th birthday that she will not be allowed to come out in society until her older sister is married. Since said, older sister is not interested in marriage, and has few social skills, it doesn't look like it will ever happen. Her family is going out for the evening, so she and her best friend decide to sneak out and go to Vauxhall Gardens. They are almost immediately separated in a barroom brawl and Prim is rescued by a handsome, young gentleman they had met at the ice parlor that afternoon. He agrees to help her find her friend and they end up spending the entire night together. She knows he is wealthy, but she only knows his first name. She knows he is out of her league, so at the end of the night she comforts herself with the idea that their hours together will carry her through the rest of her life of drudgery and marriage and child-bearing. Since it is a romance novel, you know it's not going to happen like that, but the way it goes down is highly entertaining.
I need to read 7 more books to meet my goal. I don't know. 17 more days? Seems unlikely, but whatever.
