Quarter 1 Update 2019

The first quarter of the year has flown by. Time to review my goals and see how I'm doing.

Goal #1 Read 100 books in 2019. - At the end of March, I'd read 26 books. So that is right on track. I feel like more of them should have been books for the award I'm reading for, but we'll get to that.

Goal #2 Complete the Book Riot Read Harder Challenge. - At the end of March I had read 8 of the 24 challenges. In that regard, I am ahead of the game. On the other hand, I've read all the short books available, so from here on out, the challenge books will be longer.

Goal #3 Re-read 5 Books - Well, I reread a manga that I love. I started reading another book I've read before, but I pretty much had to give that up for all the award reading I'm doing. I'm not sure how this goal will turn out.

I've read nine books for the award I'm reading for. I probably should have read a lot more than that by now. My new plan of attack is to read the large ones first. That way when it gets to the end of the year and I have to read a bunch real fast to catch up, they will go faster. Right now, I'm about half way through a book that's over 500 pages. It's quite a slog. It's not bad, it's just slow. I have found that if I read some of it, then read some of another book that's completely different just to get a break, then go back to the slow one. It makes it a little easier to get through. I don't look at the vast number of pages left and get discouraged.

Now let's look at how my reading has been distributed. It will be no surprise that I've read a lot of YA books this year.

13 YA books so far. This number is higher than the number of books I read for the award because I read one book for the award that turned out to be disqualified. I read one YA book that is the first book to an award nominee. And I read a YA graphic novel for the Read Harder Challenge that wasn't for the award.

I've read 12 Adult books. And one Children's book. The Children's book was for a Read Harder challenge.

10 of the books I've read so far are by Author's of Color.

21 books were written by women.

Contemporary Fiction - 11
Fantasy - 8
Historical Fiction - 1
Sci-Fi - 2
Non-fiction - 3
Mystery - 1

Graphic Novels - 2

Picture Books 1

I think that's a pretty complete picture of what I read in the first quarter.
