Friday Reads 1/5/2024
First Friday of the year! So many possibilities! But really I won't have a ton of reading time. Real life picks back up this weekend. I need to choreograph a dance to teach on Sunday. My church bell choir might be rehearsing, I haven't heard for sure, yet. And I have a Beta Phi Mu phone call and a hair appointment on Monday. The hair is at least 2 hours. That's ridiculous. I should shave it all off and let it grow in gray. Ha!
Anyway, here's what I am reading this weekend.
In the Kingdom of Ice: The Grand and Terrible Polar Voyage of the USS Jeannette by Hampton Sides - I have read the first 50 pages of this one. I'm going to be honest, it follows a lot of rabbit trails. There is an entire chapter about a walking race the guy who paid for the voyage did with a guy who was the champion race-walker. It has no bearing on the voyage, it just was to show how weird the guy was. But I trust Hampton Sides, so I'm still reading. The pages are thin and the print is small, but I'm powering on. I'm at part 2 now, so maybe things come together.
The Perfect Guy Doesn't Exist by Sophie Gonzales - This is my on-the-go book. The Sides doesn't really lend itself to lunchtime or doctor's office reading. This is an advanced reader copy from NetGalley. In this one, we have our main character who is extremely into a TV show about kids with magical powers. She watches every episode and writes fan fiction about the characters. One morning, she wakes up and the main character from the show is in her house promising to love her forever. Not the actor. The character. That's where I'm at so far. Her parents are out of town for 5 days, so she has that long to figure out what to do.
Emily Wilde's Encyclopaedia of Fairies by Heather Fawcett - If I finish the Sophie Gonzales book, I'll probably pick this up next as my on-the-go book. I've been meaning to read this for months. I have the paperback now, so I am all set.
That's all for this week. I don't foresee getting through In the Kingdom of Ice anytime soon, so this is all for now.
