September Wrap Up Pt. 2
Since my last update, I read 3 more books in September. Well, one of them I mostly skimmed, but I'm counting it because I read most of it.
Cruel as the Grave by Sharon Kay Penman - I really liked this one. More than the first one. I got bogged down in the chapter where the army is laying siege to the castle, but it didn't last too long. I don't understand army words. Troops, batallions, etc. I can't get a good visual of what that is, so I get lost. The story moved on fairly quickly, though, so I survived. There is a surprise pregnancy in the story, but even that didn't make me hate it. All the signs of a darn good yarn. This is the second book by the same author for the prompt to read 3 books by the same author. Also, it is a book from my TBR.
Any Person is the Only Self by Elisa Gabbert - This is the one I skimmed. It had so much promise! A book of essays about reading. The first one or two were a good time, but after that, I didn't care anymore. Oh well.
The Turner House by Angela Flournoy - I was hoping for Britt Bennett, but this isn't that. It has similar vibes. But the writing isn't quite as beautiful at the sentence level as Brit Bennett. I didn't love reading it. The two main people it is told about are both depressing. One is being haunted by a "haint" at night, and the other one is trying to kick a gambling habit after losing her job and being evicted. It's a lot. I can tell that it is good writing, but I didn't love it. This is the penultimate book on my 10 Oldest Books on my TBR list. It also fulfills the prompt to read an author's debut work. Also, it goes toward my 50 books from my shelves.
So there you go. 8 books in September. Not the most I've read in a month, but not the least either.
