June 2025 TBR

It is the last day of May. It's officially time to decide what I want to read in June.

First, we'll talk about the books I've currently got goin that I hope to finish in June.

Kills Well With Others by Deanna Raybourn - There is little chance that I will get this finished today, so here's hoping it's the first book I finish in June.

Bring Up the Bodies by Hilary Mantel - I started this in April. I didn't even touch it in May. I am crossing all my fingers that I can finish it in June. I've honestly barely even started it. If I get close enough to finishing it during my lunch breaks, I might bring it home on a weekend to finish it off.

Trejo: My Life of Crime, Redemption, and Hollywood by Danny Trejo - My plan is to polish this one of quickly before I pick up books from my shelf of the month. Hopefully in the first week.

The shelf of the month, as chosen by me in March, is Science Fiction. So let's see what I might read from that shelf.

One of my 10 Oldest Books is on the Sci-Fi shelf so that's definitely going on the list:

The Regional Office is Under Attack by Manuel Gonzales - This got a lot of buzz when it released 9 years ago. I hear it's funny. It's about an organization of female assassinations who are trying to save the world from a dark evil. But the group is under attack by a mutinous assassin looking to prove herself.

In order to help me choose books this month, I created this spinner wheel with the names of all the science fiction books on my shelves:

As you can see, I don't have a lot of sci-fi, but more than I thought. Here are the books on the list:

Perdido Street Station by China Mieville - My son read this in a lit class and when the class was over, I stole the book.

New Suns: Original Speculative Fiction by People of Color edited by Nisi Shawl - I took this off the withdraw cart at my last library for whatever reason. There are a bunch of big names involved, so we'll see if I can get past my aversion to short stories and get through this.

Leviathan Wakes by James S. A. Corey - This is another one my kid had to read for that science fiction class and again, I stole it. It's pretty solidly space fiction, which isn't my jam, but so many people talk about how fantastic it is, so I'm giving it a shot.

Starter Villain by John Scalzi - This is the one on this list that I am most excited to read. Not least because there is a kitty on the front.

Dune by Frank Herbert - What can I say. It's been on my shelf for actual years.

Light From Uncommon Stars by Ryka Aoki - A violinist whose made a deal with the devil, aliens who run a donut shop, really what's not to like?

The Long Way to a Small Angry Planet by Becky Chambers - This is the first in a series of novellas. It's also very space forward, but apparently the story is fantastic.

The Three-Body Problem by Cixin Liu - This is set during China's Cultural Revolution. Alien invaders are rumored to be attacking imminently and people are dividing into groups that will resist and groups that will welcome our new alien overlords. It sounds like a meme I recently saw about being perfectly ok with aliens taking over our current government.

Dark Matter by Blake Crouch - This is billed as a sci-fi thriller. I like Lexicon by Max Barry that was also a sci-fi thriller, but it was about words as weapons. This is about a man who wakes up in a lab and has an entirely alternate life.

So those are the books that the spinner wheel could chose for me. I feel like I will be lucky to get through two of these books in June because many of them are actual bricks. Do you see anything interesting?
