Reading In/Out

Welp, I did get a little reading time in every day this weekend, although my schedule did change up, because of course it did. I did some reading on Sunday, but then we took a family outing to the bookstore. I'm not mad about the missed reading time. I listened to audiobooks on my drive to and from church for dance rehearsal. Monday would have been a washout if I hadn't had those appointments. I listened to my audiobook on the drives between appointments and while waiting to be called to appointments I read my paper book. I was fighting a headache, so mostly I just slept Monday afternoon. I rang a bell concert Monday evening (awesome with a headache).

OUT

The Fifth Season by N.K. Jemisin - The story about finishing this book is tragic. I was fooled by the number of pages left in the book into thinking I still had many pages to read to finish it. I finished it at lunch on Wednesday. The tragedy happened when I realized I was going to a doctor's appointment and I had no reading material. Gasp. It was a struggle. I'm here to tell you. Anyway, the book was excellent, and I can see why it won the author the first Hugo award given to an African-American author.

Connections in Death by J.D. Robb - I finished this one on the way to the church on Sunday for dance. I already had the next one queued up in my Libby app, so I started that one on the way home from church. This one was interesting due to the rival street gang situation. A man was murdered in his home and it was made to look like a drug overdose. The man had been a member of the gang and had been a drug addict. In prison, he got off drugs, learned a skill, and turned his life around. Since prison, he has gotten a job, stayed off drugs, and told his old gang buddies he wasn't coming back. The murderers did a terrible job of making it look like he relapsed and Lieutenant Dallas didn't buy it for a minute. The connections in the title refer to the fact that the head of the gang was skimming money from the gang and buying up real estate in the city. He was business partners with a shady disbarred lawyer who was also doing deals with a different gang member who wanted to be the head of the gang and was ready to cause I gang way to do it.

IN

Morgue: A Life in Death by Dr. Vincent Di Maio - I started this after I finished The Fifth Season. I can tell you, the looks I got while reading this at lunch were classic. Each chapter is about a major case the good doctor took part in. I'm about 60% through it and should finish it up this week.

Glory in Death by J.D. Robb - I finally came up for the hold on the audiobook here. I don't like this narrator as much. Her accents aren't as good. I started this on Sunday, and I'm now 40% through it. In this one, the beautiful and popular prosecuting attorney is found dead on the street in an unsavory neighborhood. A week later a beautiful and popular actress is found dead in the same way. What else do they have in common that would point to a murderer? I know who I want it to be. The sleazy crime reporter that manages to turn up at the scene and be really unpleasant.

That's where I'm at right now. I'm trying to get through the next two days. Tomorrow isn't necessarily exciting, but on Thursday I am going to be full throttle all day. I am teaching two classes for staff, one of which is at a completely different location. Then I have to make tracks out to Sapulpa for our last concert of the season. Then I have 4 days off work. We will be celebrating a birthday on Saturday. Sunday I have a dance rehearsal. I have a singular appointment Monday. It's going to be fantastic!
