Friday Reads 5/8/2026

I made it! I made it throught the busiest 2 weeks of the season. I made it to all the appointments, work days, classes, and concerts. Did everything get done at work. Mostly. I am at the beginning of a long weekend. Today I did some chores around prolonged reading sessions. The day isn't over, but past making dinner and folding sheets, not much else is happening chorewise. Let's talk books.

London Falling: A Mysterious Death in a Gilded City and a Family's Search for Truth by Patrick Radden Keefe - I have a tragic tale to tell. I finished the second In Death book yesterday. I went to grab book 3 and it was checked out. Dammit. I went back to the other end of the series, but I've listened to all the ones at that end the library has. So, I went over to my Libro.Fm list to see if I had anything there of interest to listen to while I wait for book 3. I found this and started it on a whim. It's about a guy who jumped from a balcony in London in the last few year. He was the same age as my son which makes me feel some kinda way. He wasn't much like my kid in any other way, so I'm still listening.

Somewhere Only We Know by Maurene Goo - I started this one today. I'm 20% through it. It's okay. I have reservations about the way the story could go. The main character, Lucky, is a teenage Kpop star that is about to break out in America. She took her sleeping medicine and then decided she wanted a hamburger and snuck out of her hotel. She is not making good decisions and looks drunk. She runs into a guy who takes pity on her drunken state and takes her under his wing until he can get her where she belongs. The thing that bothers me is that if pictures of her looking drunk, being with a boy, NOT being with her security, and being in a bar, get out, her career could be ruined before it ever gets started. The guy, Jack, happens to moonlight as a tabloid photographer. At this point, he hasn't recognized her, but I'm sure that's coming. That's where I'm at.

After that, I will go back to my May TBR and see what I feel like. Right now I'm leaning toward These Violent Delights or The Night Tiger.

Tonight we are doing Chris' birthday presents, but we're staying at home. Tomorrow night is the dinner with his friends at J.K.s Thai Buffet. He played games with friends last night, so he's having a whole birthday weekend. Well, up to Sunday which is Mother's Day. I don't know if we'll be doing any outings tomorrow, but I figure there will be plenty of reading time.
