Friday Reads 9/18/2026

Happy 918 Day! This will mean nothing to anyone not in or around Tulsa, but we are over here in our 100 degree heat trying to celebrate something. Tomorrow is Talk Like a Pirate Day. So there's that.

There is no new information here, but I am required by law to post my reading plans for the weekend.

Apprentice to the Villain by Hannah Nicole Maehrer - I managed to get through about 30 pages of this last night. I swear my family can hear me open a book from anywhere in the house. It clearly woke up one person who hears it as a siren call to come and chat. I have finally made it past the half way mark. Woo hoo!

Back on the Rez by Brian Maracle - This is entertaining. It's written like a diary this man kept during his first year living on his reserve in Canada. He describes the political meetings, the effects of cigarette taxes on the reserve, and trying to keep his house livable in the Canadian winter. I'm almost to the 2/3 mark here.

Humble Pi by Matt Parker - This is actually really fascinating. His descriptions of problems caused by bad math are hilarious. Like in the 90s when Pepsi would let consumers trade in pop tabs for Pepsi Points. Then you could get apparel and stuff with the Pepsi Points. In the commercial, they showed a kid taking a fighter jet to school for 7 Million Pepsi Points. Turns out, that works out to about $200K for a jet. Quite a steal considering the millions of real dollars it takes the government to buy one. One guy actually traded in his points and sued when he didn't get his jet. Somebody really should have worked out the math on that one.

And there you have it. We have game night tomorrow night. Sunday is the usual stuff. I have a nail appointment Monday and then back to bell rehearsal in the evening. Monday isn't too packed. We'll see if I can't squeeze in some reading.
