Friday Reads 10/23/2026

It's Friday. According to my calendar. My schedule has been so off the last few weeks that I have completely given up on knowing what day it is. Every morning I wake up and think, "What day is it?" Some mornings it takes longer to figure it out than others. Let's talk reading plans.

Circe by Madeline Miller - I read a few pages of this this week. My doctor's waiting room spells were pretty distracting, so I read a few pages, but didn't really get much out of them. I read a few pages one evening, but I am only about 2/3 through it.

Love, Like Apples by Jeff Zentner - I started this audiobook this week. It's fine. I got 25% through it, but then a music streak hit me, and I have been doing that instead. I'm sure I'll get back to it eventually. The narrator has a pretty great Appalachian accent, but it also means I can speed the playback up to almost 2x regular speed.

Fatal Remedies by Donna Leon - I have decided this will be my next lunchtime-reading book. I finished the math book today at lunch, so I picked a short-ish book from my shelf that is also a paperback. I am not interested in toting a hardcover to work. Those are too expensive for that mess. This is the next book in this series.

One Dark Window by Rachel Gillig - It feels unlikely that I will finish Circe this weekend, but maybe I can. If that happens, I will pick up this one. I don't really know what it's about, but it's been on my radar for a while, and it fulfills a bunch of challenge prompts, so it might be time.

Tomorrow night, my kid and I are dressing up and going to see Swan Lake at the ballet. The Performing Arts Center showed up at the library a few weeks ago and planted little rubber duckies all over the building. On the underside of the duckies, they had put a QR code good for a free ticket to the performance of your choice. We each got one. We don't get to sit together, but it's a free ballet! I didn't think they would be good seats, because free, but they are both in the orchestra section. Mine is in Row J, and theirs is in Row C. They will be close enough to get sweated on. Sunday morning, the bell choir rings in church. I might get some reading time between performances. I will probably sleep all afternoon. That's a LOT of peopling on a Saturday and Sunday. Monday, my schedule is gross. I have therapy at 11:00 and a doctor's appointment at 1:30. Then I have a dentist appointment at 2:30. Then there's TFR rehearsal at 6:30. I guess I'll have reading time in waiting rooms again.

I hope your weekend is less chaotic than mine!
