Friday Reads 10/30/2026
It's the very last Friday in October! The current weather looks like Fall, but it's a little on the warm side. It's drizzling, but it looks cooler than it is. 72 degrees seems a bit high for the last of October. Call me crazy, but I have opinions. The weather apps predict that it will rain off and on all weekend. Perfect reading weather. Hooray!

Fatal Remedies by Donna Leon - I'm over halfway through this, but with only one lunch break left this week, I don't figure I'll finish it before next week. I am really enjoying it, as expected. I can use this for the HRCYED Mashup challenge because it is set in a country other than the US/UK/CAN/Aus, and it is in the 200s in terms of pages. Yay. Also, I can mark it on my series tracker. It is number 8 in the series. There are currently 33 books in the series, and I think she's still writing.

When Life Gives You Vampires by Gloria Duke - This one I do think I will finish this weekend. I am currently at the 76% mark. I have sped it up to 1.7x speed. I almost always speed up audiobooks because otherwise I will fall asleep waiting for the narrator to get through a sentence.

One Dark Window by Rachel Gillig - It's always the at-home print books that take me the longest to finish. I feel like I should consider just reading one print book and taking it back and forth to work, purely to feel like I'm getting somewhere. I haven't had time to pick this up in 3 days.

Bodies of Magic by Freya Marske - After When Life Gives You Vampires, I think I'll start listening to Bodies of Magic. It is about an academy for mages with healing gifts where they have 5 years to learn to control their power and take a 5-day trial exam. The group will go into the exam together, and they either all pass or all fail. Except on the first day, they find a dead body. Each one of them has something to hide. So it's a dark academia fantasy mystery. I have this on audiobook from Libro.fm.
That's probably a solid guess at what I will be reading this weekend. I feel like this weekend is super busy, but maybe not really more than usual? Tonight is Nerd Night. Tomorrow night we are having family game night. Sunday I have bell rehearsals from 2:30 - 5:00 and then dance at 6:00. Yes. 2.5 hours of bells. At 2:30, I'm giving a bell tutoring session to a ringer from another church who wants pointers about a song I have rung before in that position. At 3:00, we'll be having a practice session for the 6 of us who are ringing some special concerts this December. Then at 4:00, we have the usual church bell choir rehearsal. I have a small snack break at 5:00 before Dance. I usually read a bit then if I don't have to choreograph something.
On Monday, I have a nail appointment at 10:00, which is great because I have 2 broken nails. At noon I have a therapy appointment. The exterminator is scheduled at 4:15. And I have TFR rehearsal at 6:30. There is some room in there for reading. I hope.
